An excerpt from my July 11, 2010 column, entitled "Family Matters":

I often watch Israeli families in public and private settings, observing   their interactions like an anthropologist. The role children play, so   treasured and loved, is fascinating. They are more than the next   generation. They are the branches of the tree that is rooted in   tradition, grown from the seed of their fathers and fathers' fathers.   The hopes of the future are pinned on them, and so they are tended to   carefully.
